How to use watercolour pencils to add details to an embossed design. Handmade card by Debby Hughes.

Today, I have something a little different from my last two cards, which had a sharper, cleaner feel. In comparison, this card has a soft, romantic, shabby chic edge to it. Old-fashioned hazy summer days spring to mind.

I started with a piece of cold-pressed watercolour card, my craft mat and two Distress inks – Speckled Egg and Lost Shadow. I pressed the ink pads onto the mat, spritzed with water and then laid the card into the inky puddles. I dried and wet again multiple times, slowly building layers of interest while trying not to get too much depth to the colour. Once dry, I ran the panel through my die-cutting machine with the Wild Blossom embossing folder.

Using the text from images in the Tim Holtz Botanic Collage set, I stamped some areas with Lost Shadow Distress ink.

I then used Daniel Smith paints to softly build colour onto the raised leaves and petals. However, I wanted a bit more contrast, particularly for the flower, and so I used Tim Holtz watercolour pencils (Set 1) and added definition to the flower centre and veins on the petals. I then softened the lines with a damp brush.

I splattered the panel with leftover paint and white gouache. Then, once dry, I roughed up the edges with the nook of a pair of scissors and added stitching to two corners.

For the sentiment, I used the lovely Just Breathe set and stamped the greeting on vellum with clear embossing ink. I then white heat embossed it before trimming it to a banner and folding it around the panel, using glue to adhere it to the panel front.

Finally, I added the finished panel to a Neenah Desert Storm card base and accented it with sequins and pearls.
