How to max out magical starry texture! Handmade card by Debby Hughes.

Adding lots of texture is an essential element when I’m creating; on this card, I tried to max out all the magical starry texture I could! The products I used on this card came from the new Celebrate release from Simon Says Stamp.

I’ve linked all supplies with compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.

Firstly, before I get into all the texture talk, I think this card would be perfect for anyone enamoured by space. My youngest always had a fascination, in fact he still does!

The texture elements I included in this card are:

  • layers of Distress Inks
  • die cutting
  • glitter and mica flakes
  • heat embossing
  • torn vellum edges
  • stitching
  • adding dimension with foam tape
  • gems
  • embossing folder
  • sanding the top of the embossing folder impression
  • distressed cardstock edges
  • twine

Let’s start with layers of Distress Inks. Layers of colour might not be thought of as texture. However, unlike a flat wash of colour, to the eye, they give the impression of depth. The highlights on the moon could be mountains and the darker areas, valleys. So, in my opinion, yes, layers of colour count.

I used Arches watercolour card, and layers of Pumice Stone ink for the moon. I smushed the ink pad onto my craft mat, spritzed with water and then dipped the card into the puddle. Dried and repeated. I did the same for the background panel using Weathered Wood, Stormy Sky and Seedless Preserves.

I die cut the moon from the Pumice Stone piece with the circle die from the Celestrial Wishes set, and so added the die-cutting textural element.

I added a line of glue around the edge of half of the moon and sprinkled with Rock Candy Distress glitter and pressed a few Distress Mica Flakes into the glue also. It adds texture but the light catches it too.

While I’m concentrating on the focal point area of the card, let’s look at the sentiment. I heat embossed a greeting from the Celestrial Wishes set in Liquid Platinum embossing powder on Vellum, the raised lettering of the greeting adding subtle texture.

I trimmed out as a strip and then tore the edges of each end. When you tear vellum, the resulting edge is rough and paler in appearance. When it came time to attach the piece, I did so with a couple of lines of wonky stitching and a small piece of foam tape hidden behind the lettering.

The next feature includes both die-cutting and heat embossing. I took the small star from the Appreciate You dies and cut from Ivory card. I covered them in embossing ink by squishing them into the surface of the ink pad and then dipped them in the same Liquid Platinum embossing ink that I used for the greeting. I heated the powder which melted and curved around the shape of the stars – the perfect accent for the starry sky. I attached again with foam tape for dimension.

The final addition to the focal point were a few Dazzling Gems which I added with dots of Gina K Connect glue. The sparkle and shiny surface bring another texture to the sky.

I have a lot to talk about with this next picture. Firstly, I used the Shimmering Starfall Embossing Folder which left a beautiful raised sprinkling of stars across the background panel. I stepped this up a notch though by rubbing sandpaper over the raised surface, removing some of the inky background to reveal the core of the watercolour card underneath. I like how imperfect this process is. Some stars are simple embossed, some are lightly caught by the sandpaper and others are fully revealed.

Next up is the rough edges of the card. I opened a pair of scissors and used the V of the open blades to rough up the edges. In places this process simply removed a bit of the inky background, in other places it cut right into the card, I think adding more character to the panel.

Finally, on the texture front, I wrapped twine around the panel before I attached the background to a card base cut and scored from Ivory card.

So there you go, my version of a starry sky maxed out with texture and perfect for anyone with an interest in space.

I will be back on Saturday as part of a blog hop. I hope you will join me here then.
