Am I being staid and uninteresting by always looking for flowers to paint? To be honest, it is what makes me happy, and we could all do with some happiness in our lives!

watercoloured black eyed susans
My aim with this Black Eyed Susans card was to get some deep, dark shadows at the base of the petals and where leaves intersected. The play of light and dark, otherwise known as ‘value’, is what I strive for. So with the darker value at the petal bases I looked to create light and airy edges to the petal tips. I started with a wash of light yellow over all the petals and then layer by layer built the shadows in. I used Daniel Smith watercolours and touches of white gouache for highlights and splatter.

I let rip around the edges of the front panel and using a ruler to pull against, tore the card edges for a distressed look. I also added some lines of wonky stitching – two favourite techniques of mine currently.

I finished off with a Hello greeting die cut from gold mirror card and a few droplets and sequins. I mounted the finished card on a Neenah Desert Storm card base.

Your beautiful flowers are a treat to see and would happily see them on every post you make to your blog. Also, I am glad that you are posting again. I have lots of memories of Black Eyed Susans from my days in the state of Pennsylvania. Yours are absolutely lovely— love all your special touches.
Hi Debbie. So happy to see your posts again and I’m wondering when we will be seeing any videos associated with these beautiful cards. I love them all, but especially when you do a video as well. Sending continued well wishes for you.
Hi Victoria, and thank you! As for videos, it might be a wee while yet, I’m afraid. Life gets in the way of creativity sometimes, unfortunately.
I love your flowers! I choose them most often too and wonder if I’m being repetitive!
Be as staid as you like! I just adore your florals.
I love your flower paintings. I am with the other commenters, I love anything you paint. Ps I am also going to try the stitching this way! Although I have sewn for years, I cannot do stitching straight on a card! Thanks.
