Video tutorial - faux watercolour generational stamping. Handmade card by Debby Hughes inspired by Laura Bassen using supplies from Simon Says Stamp

Today I’m using the faux watercolour technique I shared in my last video but this time I’ll be looking at the effect of generational stamping. I’m not sure if that is the correct term for it, but hopefully, you’ll know what I mean. Before I get started though, I wanted to say how pleased I am that you loved the “Inspired By” series. This will be my second episode and while I was making this card, I was thinking of the fabulous Laura Bassen. I adore Laura, we started out in the card making community at about the same time and I love her beautiful soul, how she tells us all the stories of her family and what’s going on. Not to mention she is the queen of rainbows, colour in general and ink blending magician too. I’ve linked all supplies with compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.

GENERATIONAL STAMPING

Right, onto generational stamping, I used the Solid Grid Background for this card and Fabriano Artistico Extra White Cold-Pressed watercolour card. I placed the stamp in the Misti and chose a colour palette of mini Distress Inks in the purples and blues hues. I know I should’ve gone full rainbow, but for me, these are quite bold colours! I used Tumbled Glass, Broken China, Faded Jeans, Victorian Velvet and Seedless Preserves. I took each mini ink cube in turn and randomly dabbed colour around the background stamp until eventually the whole area was covered in ink. I then took a Hero Arts mister and spritzed the stamp several times until the ink beaded up on the surface. I then carefully placed the stamp on the card and gently rubbed over the surface for a minute or two, giving the ink sufficient time to soak into the surface. I lifted the door of the Misti to reveal the wet inky background. I sprtized the background again with water to get the inks moving around and blending with each other and I also while wet, splattered white gouache and Perfect Pearls solution onto the background so that the splattered blended with the colour.

I must admit though, when I looked at this background it wasn’t grabbing me, there was too much ink on the card, the colours were all a little too bold for my liking. I thought about redoing it and aiming for a lighter hand and then I remembered that there was still plenty of ink left on the stamp. I grabbed another piece of watercolour card, and popped it into the Misti, spritzed the stamp liberally with water again and repeated the process of stamping and then splattering with white gouache and perfect pearls solution. Stamping a second time is known as 2nd generation. I even repeated the process again for a 3rd generation.

Looking at the three pieces as they started to dry and there are the bold intense colours of the 1st generation, by the 2nd generation, there had been a significant drop in colour, then by the third generation, the colours were much lighter and pastel. I decided to use the 2nd generation stamping, the middle one, the one with a little colour but not too much. I felt like Goldilocks and the three bears at this stage!
