You all know I love the Anita Jeram sets from Colorado Craft Company. They just take me on a beautiful trip down memory lane whenever I see them. Well, this month, I was bowled over by the Watch This! set and made a cute card trio using each of the images from the set. Before Covid hit, my daughter had put her name down for a puppy. As it turned out, lockdown with everyone being at home was the perfect time to bring a puppy into our family. Oaky has brought so much joy, and chaos LOL and kept us busy during a time it would’ve been too easy to dwell on the horrors of the pandemic. As such, when I was colouring these images I was keeping in mind the rich, dark coat of Oaky, he is a working retriever. I’ll pop a photo below so you can see where I was starting out from. Also, today’s blog post is part of a blog hop to celebrate the new release and I have all the details of that below too, just keep scrolling. I’ve linked all supplies with compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.
CUTE CARD SET TRIO
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time for a video of these cards, however, I took a tonne of photos so that you can clearly see how I watercoloured each image. Really, I just started with the image in the middle of a piece of watercolour card and then went in with a deep, rich layer of Undersea Green for the grass which I washed out with a damp brush. The sky is Mayan Blue and as for Oaky, I layered the colours for him more. I had Nickel Azo Yellow for some of the brighter areas, lots of my favourite Transparent Red Oxide for the ginger coat and then for the darker stripe down his back, I brought in Indian Red.
I forgot to mention the red accents. Oaky always wears red it really seems to suit him and so I coloured all accents in red, the balls, the bandanas, the only thing I didn’t colour in red were the bones! The red came from mixes of Pyrrol Scarlet and Pyrrol Crimson and the bones were Buff Titanium.
I took the opportunity on each card to add Glossy Accents – the large red ball on this card, the smaller red ball on the next card and then on the final card I added Glossy Accents to the bones. Oh, and of course, I added a wet, glossy nose to each pup too!
To get the looser look to these watercoloured cards, I challenged myself to hold the paintbrush further up the handle. The further away from the bristles you hold a brush the less control you have for small details and it forces more organic brushstrokes which I actually enjoyed and liked the result.
Phew, there were a lot of pictures! However, one more, here is the muse for the day!

I need to get some updated photos, unfortunately, my health issues mean it is hard for me to get out on walks with Oaky. This photo was taken earlier this year in the snow. The colour of his ears though is also the colour that goes down his back, a rich, deep bronze.
