This card is the third in my easy watercolour background series, and I think these watercolour stripes have to be my favourite! These backgrounds are inspired by the Modern Watercolor Botanicals book by Sarah Simon (USA and UK), and this one concentrates on the watercolour blocks exercise. The result proved to be a fun background for these cuties from the Pawsome Love set. I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. EASY WATERCOLOUR BACKGROUND
I created a range of colours using Daniel Smith watercolours and mixed with plenty of water to pigment to give lovely pastel hues and drew simple stripes across a piece of Arches watercolour card. While the stripes were still wet, I allowed them to touch in places, so the colour bled from one to the other. Again, while wet, I also added drops of water to create highlight areas too and a few blooms.
I stamped the cute critters from the Pawsome Love set in Versafine Onyx Black ink on Arches cold-pressed watercolour card. I stamped them a few times to get a good impression on the watercolour card and then painted them with Daniel Smith watercolours. When dry I used the matching dies to cut them out.
I also stamped a greeting from the Love And Valentine’s Word Mix 2 set in clear embossing ink on Ivory card and heat embossed with Antique Gold embossing powder before die cutting with the matching Word Mix 2 dies. I arranged the critters to group around the sentiment and foam mounted to keep them in place. Finally, I accented with pearls, Nuvo droplets in Bubblegum Blush, Cloud 9 and Duck Egg Blue and sequins.
Here’s the Modern Watercolor Botanicals book by Sarah Simon (USA and UK) I’m working from currently which I highly recommend. Sarah also has a colouring page style book, The Plant Lady, which I don’t have yet but looks beautiful too. Check out Sarah’s Instagram @themintgardener and feel inspired by her love of flowers and painting.

super cute! the colors are great and the critters are adorable!
Delightful, Debby. Like the light washed color of the stripes — they’re a great background for these cute critters. Guess I’ll be pulling out my watercolors this weekend :) tfs
Awesome background!! Super cute card!!!
I hope readers will see that while the background is wonderfully simple — it is your intuitive and artistic gift that put both the stamp image and watercolored background together. Thank you for opening our eyes.
Love the colours as always. Would love to know the colours you choose when you have done a painting. Cute critters. Love the card.
Love this background. It will work for many card designs. Thanks!
I love the stripes. Going to have to try that on one of my cards. You never cease to amaze me with your wide variety of style, with cute images to florals. They all turn out to be stunning.
