I recently created a card (see bottom of post) using the Bee Yourself stamp set from the July Card Kit from Simon Says Stamp. Well, those cute bees were calling my name again, so I decided to do a take-two of the original card but go for a clean and simple card playing with the hexagons in the form of the stamp and die included in the kit. I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links used where possible at no cost to you.
PLAYING WITH HEXAGONS
I actually started this card by stamping the hexagon/honeycomb images from the Bee Yourself stamp set in precisely the same orientation as the original card but this time I stamped it on Fog card with clear embossing ink and white heat embossed. I then took the Small Hexagon die from the kit and die cut from the kit card in Sea Glass, Sunshine, Black and White. I used both the negative and positive parts of the die cut – adhering the hexagon frame pieces in Sea Glass and White over some of the white embossed stamped images. I then foam mounted several of the hexagons in the different card colours and added them dotted around the card, some of them lined up with the heat embossed images and some of them dotted about randomly.
I stamped the bee duo from the Bee Yourself set in Intense Black ink and for a change reached for my Copic Markers and let me tell you it’s been a while! It’s good to stretch yourself though and although I’m more comfortable with watercolours I really enjoyed quickly and simply colouring these cute bees in with Copics. To bring them to life, I added lots of extra details – I deepened the shading with Faber Castell polychromos, coated the whole of the bees with a sparkle pen, added spica glitter pen dots and finally white gel pen highlights.
Here, you might be able to see the sparkle a little. In real life, all these details, I find help to make the bees pop off the card. I foam mounted the bees with a double layer of foam adhesive so that they stood proud of the hexagon background and then for the sentiment, I stamped a greeting from the Bee Yourself set in clear embossing ink on Black card, white heat embossed and then trimmed out and foam mounted under the bees. I used a couple of strips of The Bees Knees patterned paper to ground the focal point, but having said that, perhaps bees being flying insects don’t need grounding! However, I do feel the strips of pattern helps to pull the card together more. For final accents, I added Crystal Glaze to the hexagons and dotted around Sugared Almond Nuvo drops and sequins.
