CONCORD & 9th STAMPtember
The monster from the Monster Hugs set comes with a separate image for his left hand so that you can stamp his hand to be waving or to be holding a banner or balloon and then there are a variety of sentiments to coordinate. I stamped the scene on Arches Cold Pressed watercolour card in Versafine Onyx Black ink and then watercoloured. I added three Daniel Smith colours to my palette for this card; Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Burnt Sienna and Cerulean Blue Chromium but in the main, I used the first two colours. I also pulled in some white gouache for highlights too.
I must admit I love this limited colour palette with knocked back muted hues. I think the overall effect is quite vintage in feel and really suits the expression on this little guy. With the painting finished I debated whether to add a wash of colour to the background but instead plumped for some good old splatter. I used some of the same colours and splattered with blue and brown in a diagonal across the card.
I then turned to the Monster Hugs stamp set again for the sentiment, and I already knew which one I felt suited this card. With his slightly worried expression, I thought the ‘I’m Sorry’ greeting was perfect, and so I planned on where to stamp that in between the spatter droplets and used the ruler from the Tim Holtz Media Kit to ensure I’d lined it up straight. Once I was happy with the placement, I then stamped the sentiment a few times with Versafine Onyx Black ink to get a good clear impression.
To add more fur texture, I took a dark brown Faber Castell Polychromo pencil and added a few more flicks here and then and added a little more shadows to the horns also. I then trimmed the panel down to be 4″ by 5 1/4″ in size and added foam adhesive to the back before mounting onto a Fog card base. I added Sea Breeze and Dark Walnut Nuvo droplets to accent and a tip as to how to get nice round droplets is to tap the back of the card once you’ve added the droplet and this causes the liquid to round off into a nice shape.
