Can you remember when you first saw the magic of embossing powder melting to a smooth, glossy finish? Since that first try with a heat gun, I’ve been a long-term fan of heat embossing. Heat embossed sentiments on vellum was an early favourite, white heat embossed and then watercoloured florals was where I started with my love of watercolours too. Never mind, the way that white heat embossing creates the perfect subtle background. Oh, and not forgetting embossing on a dark card for skinny sentiment strips too. I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links used.
For my card today, I used white heat embossing in four places. With each, I stamped the images in clear embossing ink before sprinkling with white embossing powder and heat setting.
- white heat embossing on a Smoke Gray card with the Center Cut Geometric Pattern background stamp
- white heat embossing on Ivory card with the middle of the Center Cut Geometric Pattern background stamp then die cutting with a Nested Circle and foam mounting over the Smoke layer
- white heat embossing a sentiment from the Vacation Time set on vellum and fussy cutting around the letters before adding skinny strips of foam adhesive behind the letters and adding to the panel
- white heat embossing a coordinating sentiment from the Vacation Time set on Slate card and trimming to a skinny banner before again adding with foam adhesive
To accent the card, I stamped a bird from the Strangeness set in Antique Linen Distress ink on Arches Cold Pressed Watercolour Card and watercoloured with Daniel Smith paints as a Swallow before die cutting with the matching die and as you’ve probably guessed, adding it to the panel with more foam adhesive. Any guesses as to what my favourite adhesive is! I really enjoyed painting this little guy while away on our recent family holiday. You can also see him in action on this card.
I mounted the panel on an Ivory card base and accented with Duck Egg Blue Nuvo Crystal Drops.
I paired the finished card with a Coral Reef envelope to bring out the colour of the Swallow’s throat.

PIN ME
Summary of the project which gives all the views of the card in one photo :D I’d love if you pinned and called by on Pinterest :D
Debbie – the swallow on today’s card really caught my eye – the delicacy of the watercoloring against the geometric background is fab. For accenting cards I love to include a few gold embossed paint splatters … adds a little richness & catches the light.
This is so gorgeous. Your watercolored lark is amazing. I like to heat emboss designs that I will be watercoloring, plus sentiment strips are another fave to heat emboss. And backgrounds, too! Lol! That pretty much covers it. I would guess that your favorite adhesive is the 3M Double-sided Foam tape!
I love the Strangeness stamp set. Your swallow is absolutely beautiful! Most times I have some heat embossing on my cards, and I like to add a bit of gold foiling or paint splatters in black or white, or gold, depending on the design and colours.
What a beautiful card! And love the bird….so soft and real-looking!
I like to emboss my sentiments on banner strips, and I have lately started to emboss my chipboard letters to make them bold and to stand out. Love what you have done with this two piece stamp set! Thanks for the chance to win it!
I love the Jazz Dance stencil. If I win, I’ll happily send the background stamp to a friend who has a limited budget for supplies. I’ve followed your blog for years and love your unique style.
What a stunning project Debby, I gather you must of seen a lot of Swallows on holiday then? I love heat embossing and it never gets old for me, when that powder changes to the glitzy colour you have chosen. But lately I have been trying to get a little more adventurous like you said; I have been heat embossing whole images so that I can use my ARTEZA water colour pens with this. I have also been heat embossing more and more on vellum which initially I was very apprehensive about. Thank you for all your video tutorials and blogs because they are so informative and I learn so much from each and everyone. :O)
I do remember when I first heat embossed and like you I still love it. And now that I have a really good heat gun, I’m enjoying it even more! The swallow is so beautiful, I will never tire of seeing your water-colouring. (Amongst other things!)
A perfect card, Debbie! My favorite tehnique is emboss resist, especially with white EP. Love how you did the background & that bird is gorgeous!! Great card!!
