How sweet is this Perfect Peonies set from Clearly Besotted?! I stamped the flower arrangement in Antique Linen Distress Ink on Arches Cold Pressed watercolour card and then painted with Daniel Smith watercolours. This is probably my most favourite way to colour a flower image just recently. I love the clean and simple design that results from no line watercolouring, however, sometimes the focal point can look a bit lost without lots of layering and dimension. One way I’ve found to counteract that is by extending the image so that more is going on in the background. I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links used.
The Perfect Peonies image consists of the two blooms, one bud and three leaf sprigs, but by using the same colours I had painted the flowers and leaves in and creating dilute marks with my brush, I extended the image out further. I like to keep this extra leaves and blooms faint as if they are in the background more, but they help to fill out and extend the focal point over more of the card front.
It’s not difficult, because to be honest, the eye sees any light pink blob with a green stem as a flower! So I added two more buds to the arrangement, one top right and one mid left and then filled in with a few green marks for more leaves. Washing some golden yellows into the top left corner of the panel to represent sunshine and a few paint splatters also help to draw the image out further.
For the sentiment, I stamped the ‘perfect’ from the Perfect Peonies set in clear embossing ink and heat embossed with Antique Gold embossing powder. I cut the panel with a Wonky Rectangle and foam mounted it on a Desert Storm card base. I then added a complementary sentiment white heat embossed on Slate card and trimmed to a skinny banner. Finally, I added a few Butterfly Kisses sequins to accent and again extend the focal point that little bit further.

This is such a sweet card. Love how you gave the image a little more by extending the image! Gorgeous!
You constantly amaze me! So inspiring! Great tips on extending out the focal point organically, although I have to to admit that I would never have the courage to add “pink blobs” to an image that I had painstakingly painted! ;) That yellow really completes the picture. It would never occur to me to add a color that wasn’t already part of the picture, but I guess that is the point in order to draw the eye a bit to the sentiment. Thanks again for the inspiration.
Wow – your card is breathtakingly beautiful! I’m always so awed by your talent!
