TIM HOLTZ STAMPTEMBER 2017
I have a card and tag to share with you today. Starting with the card and a straightforward watercolour scene, I loosely watercoloured a background with two of my all time favourite Daniel Smith watercolours – Blue Apatite Genuine a lovely dusky blue with granulating properties and Quinacridone Coral, a delightful coral pink the perfect shade for flowers and winter skies as it turns out. While the paint was still wet, I sprinkled with salt crystals and then walked away and left it to dry. That’s hard for me as I always want to fiddle with things, but I resisted and didn’t return until the next day. The salt crystals had drawn the wet paint towards them creating deeper pools of colour and where the crystals were touching the paper the salt had absorbed the colour to leave a highlight area – such an interesting effect.
I brushed off the salt crystals and then stamped the trees from the stamp set by selectively inking them in Gathered Twigs, Forest Moss and Peeled Paint Distress Inks. Once I stamped the trees, I took a damp brush and lightly moved the colour around slightly. I Stamped the deer in Brushed Corduroy and touches of Gathered Twigs to add definition and again used a damp brush to move the colours around a little.
Once dry I added Ranger Multi Medium Matte here and there over the trees and deer and then sprinkled with the sugar-like Rock Candy Distress Glitter.
I lightly watercoloured shadows with Lunar Black and then stamped the stars from the STAMPtember 2017 set in clear embossing ink and heat embossed with Ranger Liquid Platinum embossing powder. Finally, I stamped the sentiment on Ivory card in Versafine Onyx Black ink, trimmed to a skinny strip and foam mounted to top left. I then mounted the finished panel on a Desert Storm card base.
For the tag, I wanted to play with the fun snowman with the carved sentiment from the STAMPtember 2017 set. I stamped the snowman multiple times on Ivory card using a gradient of Mama Elephant pigment inks – Dark Storm, Ocean and Winter. I started with the darkest colour and stamped only the lower portion then picked the middle tone and stamped over the top of the dark ink and up over the body of the snowman and finally saved the lightest colour for his hat. I then die cut using a Stitched Dress Up Tag.
I used the Tim Holtz STAMPtember 2017 stencil on a scrap of Ivory card and blended with red inks. I then trimmed a strip of this and adhered to the bottom of the tag. I also stamped one of the circular images from the stamp set in red ink and die cut with a circle die.
Before adding everything together, I lightly brushed Antique Linen Distress Ink around the edges and then tied everything together with a loop of Sweetheart Twine.

Your card is beautiful and the tag is so much fun. Thank you so much for sharing! Congratulations Laraine!
So beautiful. The colour combinations are amazing. Little works of art! I’ve placed my order for the stamp set today as we can’t buy it here in the UK. This will be my first purchase from SS, no doubt the first of many. Thank you Debby, you’re a constant source of inspiration.
just stunning Debby…absolutely stunning.
When I saw your “winter deer” first on an e-mail from SS, I was intrigued by your sky. Thank you for sharing so clearly the step-by-step you used to achieve it. It is good to have a reminder now and again about old techniques like using salt. It does make the neatest texture effects. Your card is gorgeous.
Sooo pretty! I’m going to try that salt flake technique, looks like a lot of fun.
Amazing painting!
