I love seeing all the galaxy watercolour backgrounds and thought it time I put paint to paper and have a go. I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links used.
I started this card by taping a piece of cold pressed watercolour card to a board with painters tape and then using a pencil to draw around a circle die. With the circle mapped out on my card I used Daniel Smith watercolours to paint the galaxy. I started with a diagonal of Quinacridone Pink with some Rose Of Ultramarine mixed in and then worked my way from the circle edges with Blue Apatite Genuine and dotted in Lunar Black for some depth to the edges. I do love these Daniel Smith granulating paints so much; seriously fun! Once I’d got the base of the colours down I brought in Winsor & Newton White Gouache to add highlights and Finetec Gold Pearl for interest and shimmer. When dry I splattered generously with white gouache to add lots of stars.
While I had my paints out I also painted a strip of hot pressed watercolour card (smooth for clear stamping) for the sentiment. Again I used Quinacridone Pink with some Rose Of Ultramarine mixed in and when dry I white heat embossed a sentiment from Shine On. I love that sentiment and it brings back so many memories or reading to the children when they were little.
I also die cut the Space Journey dies from the watercolour card and lightly watercoloured a moon in Schmincke Jaune Brilliant Dark with Schmincke Sepia Brown and a touch of Finetec Gold Pearl. The stars I painted with the Finetec Gold Pearl.
I cut the Circle Of Leaves die from black card and trimmed out the leaf sprig and then I had all my elements ready to add to the galaxy watercolour.
I added all the elements with foam adhesive and then foam mounted the panel to a Fog card base. As a final touch, I added a few Amethyst and Crystal Reflections sequins.

This is so pretty Debby. The Circle of Leaves die is so perfect for your galaxy background. Just beautiful.
I love this galaxy…and I, too, would love a video tutorial!!! Actually, I don’t have words to express how amazing it is…’spectacular’ barely says it!
Such a gorgeous background!!
Hello Debby
I love your card, even more so now that I saw you demonstrate this on Sunday. I hadn’t quite grasped before how long a beautiful watercolour background like this could take to achieve, drying in between colours and how many layers etc… The card is stunning in person as it is on your blog. Thank you so much for Sunday with much admiration Cal xx
Simply stunning, Debby. I do wish I had come over to Edinburgh to watch you paint this. I heard from my blogging buddy Ruth (Crafting while the baby naps) that she greatly enjoyed the colouring event. It would have been so fun to meet up with all of you.
Stunning…
Love your card, Debby- just beautiful! I want to try this background soon!
Just beautiful – love your night sky! I finally broke down and ordered some of the Daniel Smith water colors, but doubt that I can make them look as good as you can. Thanks so much.
What a gorgeous galaxy background, love the amount of pink you left visible. The Circle Leaf die is perfect to showcase this lovely sky. Just so lovely!
