I’m delighted to be over at Waffle Flower today as well as sharing my project here. I love the look of paint on dark card and in today’s video I’m experimenting for the first time with gouache plus watercolor and how one tube of gouache can extend the use of my watercolors to enable me to get the paint on dark card look. I stamped a base of images (sentiment, leaf sprigs and berry stems) from the Wild and Free set in Versamark on Slate card and white heat embossed. Then using white pigment Ink I stamped the three flowers, leaf and berries. As you will see in the video, this white pigment ink gave a guide as to where to paint and also a base to help the colors really pop off the dark card.
For the paint I mixed Winsor & Newton Permanent White gouache with some of my current watercolors (Daniel Smith quinacridone coral, Winsor & Newton winsor orange red shade, Daler Rowney phthalo turquoise and Winsor & Newton permanent sap green + prussian blue). Unlike watercolors which are mainly transparent, gouache is opaque in nature and so the true color shows despite dark cardstock. Using a fine tipped paint brush I painted over the white pigment ink and then used the brush with just white gouache to add a few details and dots to fill in spaces in the design.
The painted panels are mounted on a mat of Surf Blue card and then on a white card base.

Thank you Debby. This is a great technique! I love the look of the white on the dark cardstock, and the beautiful colors created with white gouache and watercolor. I have only used the gouache for spattering and will now get more use from it, the watercolors and my collection of card stock!
