Warning: long waffly post!
Personalising cards means so much to the recipient don’t you think? It doesn’t need to be much, just a few touches that hopefully they will notice. The other day I spent ages wracking my brain for a card for a teenage boy. There I was with all the cards I have already made and all the supplies I have at my fingertips and yet I was surfing the web and contemplating a printed comedy card :o Urgh, the dreaded male cards and then add in teenage too! The only thing was, I was seeing these cards with close to the bone sentiments that I thought might make a teen boy laugh but made me cringe and I wasn’t happy to send one.
I hope that makes sense, but either way it had me turning my gaze back to my supplies and thinking ‘I can do this!’. Cute – no, elegant – NO, quirky – hmm that might work. Tim Holtz crazies? Perfect! I’ve linked all supplies at the end of this post. Compensated affiliate links used.
The family in question has two beautiful Hungarian Viszlas – one prim sweet-natured girl and one out there crazy girl so you can guess which one I tried to capture on this card LOL. Seriously this girl is C.R.A.Z.Y! She’s always the one getting in to trouble with a goofy grin on her face. Stolen cooking chocolate? Off both girls go to the vet but you just know which one it was!
The Crazy Dog set has the perfect Vizsla-like image and I just added a couple of personalised touches to hopefully catch their eye. When stamping I masked off part of the tail. Not from any horrible tail docking or anything but because as a pup she got stung on her tail by a bee and she wouldn’t let it heal. Numerous trips to the vet, the dreaded collar of shame, dressings, more dressings … but for a long time nothing was working and the vet had to keep removing the end of the tail in the hope of getting a clean wound that would heal and she would leave alone. Eventually it worked (phew) but she was left with half a tail however I can testify that it is still plenty to wag and batter your legs with when she’s pleased to see you! Another barely noticeable but simple touch was the collar – she has a cream woven collar with little red flowers on it. One last one was the pink area on her nose. Yes, she’s being naughty again and has a patch on her nose that she keeps banging and won’t let heal. Hopefully picking up the things which makes a pet unique will make this card special for the recipient. OK we are talking teen boy here so perhaps only his Mum and Dad will notice LOL.
I wasn’t sure whether to share this card because I wanted to make the image more quirky with Crazy Things but I didn’t have that set and on a short timescale I chose to draw a hat and a balloon with a black waterproof marker myself. I have zero ability to draw and there was no way I could have drawn the dog but just about managed to scrape together a couple of passable accessories in the Crazy Things style however I will be putting the accessories set in my basket for future cards to make my life easier!

Love the story of the “trouble-maker” Vizsla as much I adore your gorgeous card, Debby! As a proud owner of 2 Irish Red Setters, I must admit that they have provided me with much joy as well as frustration over the years, so I can definitely empathize with the dog owners you post about. And yes, add MALE and TEENAGE to a card making occasion and all it spells is “Oh Oh”, but you did an amazing job and he’s sure to get a smile from this fantastic, personalized card.
Oh Setters! I understand they take crazy to a new level LOL!
Your teen recipient is sure to love this card! It’s quirky and silly enough to elicit even a teenager’s chuckle. And that docked tail and pink nose cracks me up!
This is the first time in 31 years that we’re without a fur child in the house. I miss my little beagle girl terribly but the memories of her silly antics still and forever warm my heart.
I’m so sorry for your loss Dori :( It’s true that they leave paw prints on our hearts isn’t it. I have my own paw prints too from our old Collie who passed a few years ago now. He was my first baby before the children.
Cute I love this stamp set, I have it and any time I make a card with it the person always thinks the image is so cute
Awesome cards Debby, Love the watercoloring! You rock!!
Debby, I love the way you personalized this card – and for sharing the story. I think this is a perfect card for a teenage boy!
A perfect card for a teenage boy! I love it! I also love the story that went with it!
A great story and a fantastic card. Like you, I try to personalize my cards when I know the recipient. Masculine cards are hard enough and like you said add a teenager to that and I have a challenge! You did fantastic with this card and I am sure he’ll notice!
Your card is adorable! I enjoyed reading your story of card creating and the story of the pup. Laughed so hard!
